2013

In 2013, the Club inducted the following players into the Hall of Fame:- Johnny Hart, Donald Mackay, Örjan Persson, George Fleming, John Reilly and Alan Main.


JOHNNY HART
Total Apps: 131   Goals: 28

Johnny had been with Albion Rovers, Motherwell and St Johnstone before he signed for United in 1926. He joined the Club as it entered a second season in Division One and became a regular in the side. United were relegated in April 1927 but Johnny remained at United and helped gain promotion again in season 1928-29. 

The First Division campaign of 1929-30 ended in relegation again and Johnny was released, going to Ross County as player/coach. He applied, unsuccessfully, for the vacant Manager’s job in May 1931 but was appointed trainer in July 1932. He left five years later but was back again in 1946 in the same role. After another seven years with the Club he gave up his coaching position but carried on as a scout for several more years.

 

DON MACKAY

Donald joined United from Forfar Athletic in May 1962. As first choice keeper, he looked set to have a good season but sustained an injury in October, which kept him out of the side for the rest of the campaign. Sandy Davie took over and thereafter both keepers had their time as first choice until Sandy left. When Hamish McAlpine became established in 1970-71, Donald played less often and he was released in April 1972, after which he joined Southend United.

 

ÖRJANN PERSSON

Örjan joined United from Orgryte in Sweden along with Finn Dossing for a total fee of £10,000. He became a regular in the side over the next three seasons. He had already been capped for his country and whilst with United, he added more to his tally. Along with Lenny Wing, he was the first United player to be capped at full international level. At the end of 1966-67 Orjan severed his ties with United and eventually joined Rangers in exchange for Davie Wilson and Wilson Wood.

 

GEORGE FLEMING

George had started his senior career at Hearts. After he arriving at Tannadice in 1972, he became a regular in the line up for the rest of the season and for the next eight years. 

George was in in the side that took part in United’s first Scottish Cup final in 1974. He then collected a winner’s medal in the League Cup final in 1979. After a successful career at United, George joined St Johnstone in July 1980 for a fee of around £10,000.

 

JOHN REILLY
Total Apps: 76   Goals: 26

John joined United from Strathtay on an ‘S’ form in January 1977. A Scotland schoolboy international, he was called up for United reserves at the end of 1978-79. Over the next five years he played mainly in the reserves, but was also frequently in the first team line up. In season 1982-83, he made a significant contribution in the squad that won the Scottish League championship. In August 1985, John joined Motherwell for a fee reported at £50,000.

 

ALAN MAIN

Alan joined United from Elgin City in 1986 and became a Scotland youth and Under-21 international. In his first three years with United, he played infrequently in the first team and had was on loan at Raith Rovers, Cowdenbeath and East Stirlingshire. The breakthrough came in October 1989. Alan played in the 1991 Scottish Cup final collecting a runners-up medal. In the latter stages of his United career he faced competition for the no. 1 jersey and was also sidelined by injury. He left in January 1995 to join St Johnstone for a fee of around £150,000.
