SPONSOR THAI STUDENTS

Interested in sponsoring the education of a disadvantaged child in western Thailand? Please email lindsay@volunteerinthailand.org for more details and the application form

Our dream at Go M.A.D. is simple: We believe that change on a global scale begins with educated children at the local level. By sponsoring a child's education, YOU can help children receive the lifelong gift of knowledge and access to opportunities otherwise denied to them.

About the Program

With your support, and the support of other caring sponsors, organizations we are in contact with can provide the daily necessities and schooling for poverty-stricken children. The children will benefit from much-needed programs that enable them to attend and thrive at school, provide basic medical care, and establish other projects, such as wood-working or weaving, to develop their skills.

We encourage not only individuals, but families or groups of friends to come together and sponsor a child. Go M.A.D. oversees School Sponsorship for children at two orphanages in Western Thailand.

History

Baan Unrak 'Home of Joy' and Ananda Vidyadham Community Center, fondly known as Dada's Boys’ Home, are two orphanages within a half hour apart in the western Thai province of Kanchanaburi, near the Burmese border.
Both projects are part of the Neo-Humanist Foundation, a non-profit, non-religious organization with its head office in India. The Foundation creates and maintains community development and self-sufficiency projects in impoverished regions of the world. It is primarily composed of a base of permanent full-time volunteers who act as social workers responsible for individual projects. The Homes in Thailand welcome the support of overseas volunteers who come to teach, care for, and lend assistance to the 140 orphans who live there.

Baan Unrak's founder is Donata Dolci, originally from Italy. In Thailand, she goes by the name, Didi Devamala. Assisting her is Didi Anuraga from Norway. Richard Zoleta from the Philippines founded Dada's Boys Home in 1996. ‘Didi’ means sister in Bengali, and ‘Dada’ means brother. These names are given to those who dedicate their lives to helping others under the Neo Humanist philosophy. Didis and Dadas, along with the children, practice yoga and meditation daily and adhere to a vegetarian diet.

Dada's Boys Home is located in Huay Ma Lai, a remote village on the Thai-Mynamar border. It is independent, responsible for its own funding and self-sufficiency. There are currently thirty children, mostly boys, between 3 and 19 years of age residing there.

The Homes only accept children in cases where it is judged to be the healthiest choice for both child and family. The region suffers from instability as families are destroyed by disease, poverty, and cultural changes. Many children in the orphanage come from families in which the mothers have been abandoned. Some young mothers try to sell or give their children away while others turn to prostitution. While the Homes provide a sanctuary for destitute children, they believe the best place for a child is with its family. Unfortunately, many of the children in the orphanage come from abusive or otherwise disadvantaged environments.

Goals Attained

In May 1999, Baan Unrak orphanage opened a kindergarten with more than 30 enrolled children in Sangklaburi town. Baan Unrak also opened a primary school, offering classes from KG to grade 6, next to the Home, providing education in English and Thai.

Baan Unrak raised the money to purchase land for the school by means of the sale of Christmas cards designed by the children. Go M.A.D. runs this annual fundraiser, called 'Christmas Cards That Give' Campaign through the JET Programme in Japan.

The school is staffed mainly by volunteers. Parents who can afford to pay fees will be charged a small fee to enter their children. Sponsors will pay the fees for children whose families cannot afford the fee.

You will initially receive a photo and a brief biography of your child's life. Your sponsored child will send you drawings and letters whenever possible.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

BUY A BED for BAAN UNRAK 'HOUSE OF JOY'

Steve and Sandy Snidero are former JET Programmer participants who have volunteered various times at Baan Unrak orphanage in Western Thailand. Didi Devamala, the project director, asked them to return to help manage the new Baan Unrak orphanage built nearby the former one in Sangklaburi. Baan Unrak provides a loving home, education, and healthy lifestyle to over 120 Thai and Burmese orphaned and abadoned children.

Go M.A.D. is asking you to buy a bed at the new orphanage for $50 USD.

Your donation, whatever the amount, is greatly appreciated. Please write to Steve at ssnidero@hotmail.com
