With a team of card sellers in Japan and elsewhere, the "Christmas Cards That Give" Campaign raises awareness and funds for Baan Unrak 'House of Joy' orphanage in Sangklaburi, Western Thailand. The orphanage relies on this annual campaign to provide funds for a warm, loving home, nutritious meals, educations activities, clothes, books, toys and much much more to over 120 orphaned and abandoned children.
For JETS in Japan
Please support the children of Baan Unrak by signing up to be a card seller in your prefecture. The campaign usually aims to have 1-2 sellers per prefecture, but more in the cities and in Hokkaido are needed.
Prefectural representatives sell between 50-150 packs of cards, depending on the size of the JET community. Usually, the number of packs is based on previous year’s numbers for your prefecture, but you can always order more. Please check to see if someone in your ken has remaining packs from years past. If you don’t sell them all, the cards can be either sent back to Go M.A.D.'s National Fundraising Coordinator or kept for yourself to sell or use next year. Either way, you don’t have to pay out of pocket for them.
In Japan, you can directly deposit the proceeds from your bank into the Go M.A.D. bank account in Japan, or send it by registered mail (‘genkin kakitome futo’), a 20 yen special envelope you can purchase at your local post office, to the National Fundraising Coordinator in Japan.
The JET community is a great market for the cards, as there is a dearth of Christmas cards in Japan. Sell them at your mid-year conference in Oct/Nov, bring them to JET formal functions and parties, advertise them through local newspapers and TV stations to the local Japanese community. Despite not traditionally giving Christmas Cards, many Japanese people have bought cards to support the campaign in the past.
For Those outside of Japan
The campaign is open to anybody anywhere to receive and sell cards. To make it worth the cost of mailing them to you, we ask that you try to sell at least 100 packs of cards. The earlier the start, the better!
*Sign up before October 15th in order to receive the cards in time to sell sell sell! The cards will be sent directly from Thailand to the seller’s address.
The Cards
The cards are designed by the children themselves. They have a colourful Xmas or wintery design on the front and a picture of the child on the back, along with their name and age. They are blank on the inside. There are 10 cards per pack, white envelopes included. The price is 1,000yen per pack, or about $11 dollars. There is a set of new designs every year, each created by a different child of Baan Unrak Children’s Home.
If there are any packs of cards you just can not sell at the end, return them to the National Fundraising Coordinator in Japan, keep them for yourself to use/sell next year, or pass them on to interested volunteers for next year. Thank you!
Note: If you are asked to pay tax on the delivery of the cards, please deduct the cost of the tax from whatever you sell and reimburse yourselves.
We also have Thai Handwoven Goods to sell!
Please ask the National Fundraising Coordinator in Japan for photos, fact sheets, stories, and other material to help you raise awareness about the Home.
